It is particularly linked to platforms such as TikTok. Brainrot involves a constant consumption of short and fast-paced content that can overwhelm the brain and lead to decreased attention span, mental exhaustion, and a reduced ability to engage in more meaningful activities.
Being constantly online can lead to a sense of dependency, making it hard to disconnect and engage in offline activities or real-life interactions. A 2019 study found that nearly 9.4% of youth in the United States were reported to excessively use media, which may contribute to cognitive decline.
It’s essential to distinguish between brain rot and cognitive decline, as they are fundamentally different.
