The SOS Safety Magazine Teen Scholarship Competition (the “Competition”) is coordinated by SOS Safety Magazine (“SOS”) and is designed to encourage teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19 to learn about and address social issues in their schools and communities. Participants are asked to submit an action plan, either in the form of an essay or a video submission, to tackle social issues in their school or community (the “Submission”).

By entering a Submission into the Competition, all contestants agree to be bound by these official competition rules and regulations:

1.How to enter:

Eligible entrants should submit a completed entry form together with their Submission to the SOS Safety Magazine Teen Scholarship Competition website at https://soskids.ca/youth-projects/5000-scholarship-yearly-bursary (the “Website”). All Submissions must address a social issue of the entrant’s choice in order to be eligible for the Competition. Limit one (1) entry per person. Entrants making additional Submissions will be disqualified. All Submissions and entry forms become the property of SOS and will not be returned. By entering a Submission, you agree that SOS shall have the right (but not the obligation) to publish any Submission on its website or in other associated promotional and publishing material.

In other words, you must be a teenager on the day the contest closes (December 31st each year). To the extent that the entrant has not yet reached the age of majority in their province or territory on or before the start of the Competition Period, such entries must include a completed and signed copy of the Competition Entry Parent/Legal Guardian Waiver Form (attached). Limit of one entry per person. Any additional entries will lead to disqualification.

  2. be suitable for publication in a public forum, meaning it cannot contain material that violates or infringes upon the rights of third parties, including privacy and intellectual property rights; material that is hateful, tortuous, defamatory, slanderous or libelous; material that includes inappropriate or offensive language; or material that promotes racism, bigotry, violence, hatred or harm against any group or individual; and
  3. propose an action plan to tackle a social issue in the entrant’s school or community.

3.Submission format:

The Submission with the highest number of votes at the end of the Voting Period will be declared the Winner.

The Winner will receive a five ($5,000 CAD) thousand dollar scholarship (the “Prize”) to attend a post-secondary institution of their choice. SOS will release the Prize once the Winner has confirmed attendance to a post-secondary institution by providing SOS with a notice of enrollment from the selected post-secondary institution.

The Winner will be notified in writing by email or by phone shortly after the selection of the Winner. If the Prize is not claimed within 14 days after notification, such Prize will be forfeited and awarded to the Submission with the next highest number of votes received during the Voting Period. The Prize must be accepted as awarded and is not redeemable for cash or transferable for any reason. The Prize is awarded “AS-IS” and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied.

7.Waiver and Assignment of Rights and Release:

As a condition of entering the Competition and accepting the Prize, each entrant agrees that if he/she is selected as the Winner:

  2. he/she will irrevocably assign to SOS all rights, including copyrights, that he/she may have to the Submission, to be used by SOS for any purpose it deems appropriate. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, SOS will be allowed full usage of the Submission, including for, but not limited to, publication on the SOS Safety Magazine Website at https://soskids.ca and for promotional purposes, without further compensation; and
  3. he/she will be required to sign an assignment and release waiver of all rights, including moral rights and copyrights, prior to accepting the Prize.

SOS reserves the right to disqualify any contestant for any reason whatsoever in its sole discretion.

Any participant who, in the opinion of SOS, attempts to tamper with or inappropriately influence any part of the voting or interfere with or manipulate the voting procedure may be disqualified from further participation in the voting. SOS decision in this regard is final and conclusive.
