9 Helpful Gifts for Somebody with Anxiety
Do you know somebody that suffers from crippling anxiety this holiday season?
When somebody we love has anxiety, we often wish we could fix it for them. Though we might not be able to relieve their struggle completely, we can gift them things that’ll help them cope from day to day. These gifts are all focused on self-care and relaxation. Most importantly, gifting one of these items will say to them, “I am here for you” which is the greatest gift of all.
Self-care is a huge factor in improving mental health. Unfortunately, it’s easy for a person with anxiety to remember to step back and breathe. Give them a few bath bombs with a link to a playlist of relaxing music to inspire them to have a quiet evening and clear their mind.
Weighted blankets offer deep pressure simulation. Studies suggest that deep touch pressure (provided by weighted blankets, weighted vests and hug) assists in lowering cortisol levels and promoting serotonin throughout the body. Not only will a weighted blanket reduce anxiety, but they will also minimize sleeplessness, leading to more restful sleep.
If you have a friend or family member that continually overthinks, suggest that they keep a journal on hand to jot down their racing thoughts. Writing feelings or events throughout the day may help to release the information, thus providing a quieter brain. Having a journal nearby may improve their focus at school or work, as well as their mental health.
“The Universe Has Your Back” by Gabrielle Bernstein
“The Universe Has Your Back” by Gabrielle Bernstein aids in helping one relinquish their control to the Universe, and in turn, live with less anxiety and stress. Any self-help book that boasts coping methods and calming meditation techniques are sure to be an excellent gift. This read by Gabrielle Bernstein happens to be our favourite.
Yoga mat or meditation pillow
Both yoga and meditation are an excellent tool for promoting mental and physical health. Encouraging your anxious friend to take some quiet time to be mindful is a helpful gift. Regardless if you believe your friend would prefer movement (ex: yoga), or complete relaxation (ex: meditation), you can tailor this gift to fit their interests. You can also throw in a yoga or meditation class membership or purchase an app that’ll assist them in their practice.
A perfect way to unwind after a hectic day is to light your favourite candle and put your feet up. Find a scent that you feel would relax the person you’re gifting. Lavender, peppermint, chamomile and vanilla are all great scents that’ll smell great! Avoid anything that is too strong or spicy.
Massage gift certificate
Let your friend or family member be pampered at the spa! Purchase a gift certificate for a relaxation massage from a massage therapist you trust. Give them a full hour of complete relaxation to try and calm their mind!
Diffuser or essential oils
A diffuser or box of essential oils is a wonderful gift for somebody that struggles with anxiety. You can purchase a tabletop, desk, or car diffuser depending on where you feel your friend feels the most anxiety. The best essential oils for anxiety are lavender, rose, peppermint, chamomile, frankincense and bergamot. Tuck in an instructional pamphlet for all of the uses of essential oils: diffused, added to bath water, inhale or massage.
Love and understanding
The best gift that you can offer to somebody suffering from anxiety is love and understanding. Offer them a hand to hold and a safe place to go when they are struggling the most. Give them valuable advice and listen to them verbalize what they are going through. Nothing beats having great support in life. Be patient, accepting and understanding of whatever your friend or family member is experiencing.
The holidays are for giving love to your friends and family. So, as we are all finding the “perfect gift” don’t lose sight of a kind card and a warm hug! Spend time with the people you love the most and strive to be the best friend you can be.
