“People thought I was sheltered, homeless…”

When Natasha Boshoff and Suaad Issa decided to create a video to challenge the stigma around mental health they had to look no further than their own classmate.

This is the story of Becca Cala, a girl who has had to experience the sad twist and turns of fate as a child which some never have to experience at all. Despite her diagnosis with multiple illnesses including, Tourettes Syndrome, OCD, Pervasive Mental Disorder, and ADHD, Becca has become a beacon of happiness, lighting up the days of all around her.

Becca had been a target of bullying due to her undiagnosed mental illnesses since the age of 16. Needless to say, she did not have an easy childhood; but finally being properly diagnosed has allowed her to seek the help she needs and open up about her mental illness – and now she’s ready to crush the stigma.

Children’s Mental Health Ontario hosts an annual contest “Change The View” encouraging contestants to submit a 2 minute video to raise awareness for mental health in hopes of opening up conversation about mental health to end the stigma. The winner receives a $1500 cash reward.
