Sisters Catie, Dara, and Jana, aged 13, 11, and 11, respectively, were buried by seeds after playing on a truck loaded with canola. The incident occurred Tuesday, October 13th, 15km east of Rocky Mountain House in Withrow, AB.

Two of the sisters were pronounced deceased at the scene and hours later, the third sister passed away at Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, AB. The family is nothing short of devastated, with a statement released on their behalf saying “Our kids died living life on the farm… Thank you for the overwhelming support we have received from all of the first responders, neighbours, and friends. We would ask media to respect our privacy at this time of grief.”

The girls’ former school is also in mourning, with a crisis management team at Condor Elementary School to offer support. The Superintendent of the Wildrose School Division, Brad Volkman, made a statement saying that “they still supported the school and were just a tremendous, community-minded family.”

Rachel Notley, Alberta’s premier, and Oneil Carlier, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Minister, also offered their condolences.

This tragedy is a reminder to always make safety an utmost priority, wherever you are. It is never known when a devastating incident might occur so being proactive and vigilant at all times is very important. However, accidents happen, and it is crucial to band together and offer support when they do.
