Help The Homeless This Winter
As Canadians, we all know far too well how cold it can get and winter gear can get quite expensive.
The Eastern Canadian city of Halifax has started a trend of helping the homeless this winter in a very unique way. To make braving the cold a little more bearable, coats were tied to street poles for those who cannot afford to purchase their own jacket.
Tara Smith-Atkins and her daughter, along with seven of her young friends, got together on her daughter’s birthday to gather coats and tie them to street poles in downtown Halifax. Each jacket was tagged with a note that read “I am not lost! If you are stuck out in the cold, please take me to keep warm.”

The children went to distribute the coats during Smith-Atkins’ eighth birthday and “definitely learned the importance of it” Tara tells CBC.
“When we got back in the car after an hour on the street, they were all freezing and crying for the heater to be on and complaining because they were cold. And they were bundled up.”
Homelessness is a serious issue and it’s important that we help those who cannot help themselves. Join the trend and donate your old winter gear to organization like the Salvation Army or even better: go out and collect donations in your community.
