The news of his death broke waves on Monday, August 11th.

Marin County Sheriff’s Office said Williams was found unconscious at his home in Tiburon, California and was pronounced dead shortly after 12 noon local time.

Cause of Death Believed to be Suicide

Investigation is currently under way to determine the cause of death. At this time, suicide due to asphyxia is believed to be the cause. Asphyxia is the inability of someone to acquire enough oxygen via breathing for an extended period of time, often leading to death.

“He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

The actor had publicly battled addiction throughout his career, including an addiction to cocaine in the 70’s and 80’s. He also went to rehab for alcohol abuse in 2006.

The World Lost an Amazing Person

The world has lost an incredible human being and amazing artist. His amazing talents brought laughter and joy to thousands of his fans. He was known as one of the funniest and kindest actors in hollywood. His work touched many generations of movie and tv viewers.

Williams collected two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and five Grammys during his career.

Some of his most loved works include: Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, Hook, Bicentennial Man, Patch Adams, Aladdin, Jumanji, The Bird Cage, One Hour Photo, Final Cut, Jack and more.

The President of the United States, Barack Obama, has released a statement regarding his death:

“Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets,” Obama said in the statement.

Depression and Suicide

While many people are shocked that someone who exuded such laughter and positive energy would take their own life, we must remember that no one is immune to mental illness. Depression can happen to anyone. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of depression and if you suspect someone you love having suicidal thoughts, reach out for help.
