Slender Man

When Urban Legend Online Becomes Reality

Two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls are charged as adults in Waukesha Court on Monday against the attempted murder of their friend. The girls invited their friend to a slumber party, lured her into the woods and stabbed her 19 times. What would cause them to do such a thing you may ask? It was all an evil plot to become “proxie” to Slender Man, a paranormal fictional character from an online horror fiction website.

The girls told investigators that they had plotted to kill their friend for months all as a requirement to become Slender Man’s “proxy”.

Did these girls really confuse reality with fantasy? Or is there more? According to their lawyer, one of the 12 year old girls shows signs of mental illness, and should be in hospital. The lawyer said he would push to get the girl’s case transferred to juvenile court, where mental health assessment and treatment could be considered.

The girls are being held at juvenile detention centre, with bail set at $500,000.

Who Is Slender Man?

Slender Man was created in 2009 as a postmodern urban legend. He is fictional, but treated as an urban legend. He is unnaturally tall, with stretched limbs. He is usually depicted wearing a dark suit and tie, with his head in complete white, hairless and faceless. He was created by a user with the handle Victor Surge. He is an example where fictional stories are treated like reality.

According to the girls, they became familiar with Slenderman from the horror website creepypasta.wikia.com. It is unclear if they accessed this website from home, school or elsewhere. Their initial plan was to kill her in her sleep, but the plan changed and they loured her into the woods, pretending to play a game and stabbed her 19 times. The girls took turn stabbing her. The victim was left in the woods, and was found by a cyclist. She is in stable condition

Dangers of the Internet

If there is a lesson to be taken from this it is for parents to ensure you take the steps to properly monitor your children online. Particular sites are not meant for children. Some children are not able to distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality, and just because a website exits does not mean it is healthy for impressionable minds.

Mental health issues in youth are just as serious as in adults, and need to be addressed.
