Teacher Uses Apples To Explain The Effects of Bullying
A teacher from Birmingham, UK teaches her young class about the effects of bullying. She illustrates this particular lesson perfectly with two apples; a simply yet surprisingly effective method.
Prior to the lesson, Rosie Dutton, took one of the two apples and continuously dropped it on the floor. She then showed the apples to the class and compared the two. Both were the same color, size, shape, and looked juicy enough to eat. However, when she started to compare the two apples she started to talk about she much she disliked the one apple, claiming that it was disgusting, horrible colour, and short stemmed, even though it appeared to look perfectly normal. She then had the students pass the apple around and had them pick on the apple as well by calling it names. They then passed around the other apple giving it praise and saying how beautiful and lovely it was.
Once the class had their fair share of describing and comparing the two identical apples, Dutton cut open both apples. The apple that had been praised was clear, fresh, and juicy. The other apple that they had said unkind words to was bruised and mushy inside.
This was a light bulb moment for all the kids in the classroom. They understood that the bruises and broken bits of the apple had been caused by the words and actions of the students.
“When people are bullied, especially children, they feel horrible inside and sometimes don’t show or tell others how they are feeling.” -Rosie Dutton
