Youth Gangs: Safety vs Danger
It’s one thing to know that gangs are dangerous, but how do you stay away from them?
Choose good friends
Avoid people who you know are in gangs. Don’t go to parties if you know that gang members will be there.
Be yourself
Don’t dress like a gang member or use gang slang. You might look suspicious to the police or real gang members.
Stay in school
Most gang members drop out of school. Staying in gives you the chance to live up to your potential.
Don’t use drugs
Drugs are a big part of gang culture. Say no.
Get a life
Join a team or a club. Try a new hobby like drawing or photography. Get a job. You will meet new people and stay out of trouble.
Be strong
No one can force you to do anything you don’t want to do. Don’t let anyone pressure you into joining a gang.
Speak up

Choose you
Your future is bright. You can choose to stay safe and take care of yourself.
How do I get out?
- Don’t try to do it alone. You need help from people who specialize in gang exiting.
- Don’t tell anyone in the gang that you want to leave. This could put your safety at risk.
